Reduction of feed intake drives performance across the pig lifespan. In studies of nursery pigs fed varying levels of DDGs, final weight declined in proportion to DDG percentage—nursery pigs fed 15%-20% of DDGs had a 5% reduction in body weight by end of the nursery stage.
When the results were compared against the percentage of pigs that did not move to the next phase, whether due to mortality or culling, the team found a direct relationship. In reviewing data of DDG dose against carcass weight in the finish phases, an increase in DDGs correlates with reduced weight compared to a 6% control.
When taken together, the studies support the conclusion that, rather than formulating to low invoice price, establishing proper balance among ingredients that maximize intake is proven to maintain carcass weight—and improve financial outcome.
