Diagnostic Plans Improve Elimination Program Success
Robust diagnostics plans improve long-term efficacy of elimination programs.

For producers considering implementation of a large-scale Mhp elimination project, having a specific diagnostic plan in place helps to define these key milestones:

  • Closure. Once the herd has reached Day Zero, (the point at which the entire herd has been exposed to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae), the herd population should be closed to start the control.
  • Vaccination. Administering an initial dose at closure and again midway through the closure helps maintain a robust immune response.
  • Medication. Testing is required to understand medication requirements.

Diagnostic plans are also an important component of post-program monitoring to avoid cross-herd contamination.

Baumert also recommends having partners on-site at farms, as physical presence greatly improves communication and efficacy of intensive programs.

“Herd closure length and an individual animal medication program with an effective antibiotic are both key to having a high success rate.”
